Shikhandi and Other Stories They Don’t Tell You

Shikhandi and Other Stories They Don't Tell YouShikhandi and Other Stories They Don’t Tell You by Devdutt Pattanaik

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is the third book I have read from the writer and as expected from the book blurb based on an unexplored theme of male-to-female (or vice-versa) sexuality change or cross-dressing from the pages of mythology and ancient texts, is a well researched and interesting book to read. Apart from the story of Shikandin or Shikhandini and Iravan (Arjuna’s son from Naga Princess Uloopi) from Mahabharata, all the other stories in the book were unknown to me. The book highlighted with many stories and facts involving our many gods and goddesses of Hinduism, how our ancient culture and puranic and vedic texts positively viewed on the subject of transgender or in other terms homophobic relations which our extreme contemporary religious thinkers and followers frown upon and considered as outcasts.
